Deprimerande Statistik

DN; "Problemet är inte att Kina vägrar att fördöma Burma, problemet är att väst inte vågar fördöma Kina för att inte fördöma Burma", löd några rader i en teckning som försökte sammanfatta det diplomatiska läget i den thailändska tidningen The Nation.

Men Kina ska ju inte fördömas, de senaste årens orgie i frihandel har ju förvandlat Kina från en kommunistdiktatur till ett mirakel av välstånd, demokrati och frihet...

Apropå det så läste jag en av mina stora förebilder, Johan Norbergs deprimerande statistik ;

Civil liberties: 7, the lowest possible (Freedom House)
Press freedom: 164 of 166 countries (Reporters Without Borders)
Freedom from corruption: 179 of 179 countries (Transparency International)
Economic freedom: 140 of 141 countries (Economic Freedom of the World)

Och jag tycker ju att hårda sanktioner och massiva protester verkligen är berättigade mot ett land som uppvisar sådana nedslående siffror vad gäller mänskliga rättigheter. De har lång väg att gå innan de kan uppvisa samma positiva resultat som frihandel har givit Kina - det land de borde sträva efter att efterlikna;
